Shall we verb?

“We hope to medal at least four times.”

“Demba Ba has is benched again.”

“My colleague has foregrounded the main issue.”

“The front carriage will not be platformed.” (that’s real, I just heard it a minute ago on a First Great Western train)

What do you notice?

Yes,  nouns can become verbs. Indeed they are doing so more and more. You might even say they are verbing.

Maybe this has always happened. To clothe, to shoe (a horse) to seat, to head (the ball), to envelope, to signpost…. were these early versions of the same thing?  Or was it the other way around?

The Guardian’s football e-mail the Fiver has a good line in these – like Alex Ferguson “the referee was appalling” he purpled.
